Eleele Shopping Center first opened for business in 1955 under the auspices of McBryde Sugar Plantation to serve Eleele's plantation camp and surrounding communities. At that time, Eleele Shopping Center's main stores were Eleele Super, Kauai's first cash and carry supermarket, and Ben Franklin, a variety store that carried dry goods, sundries, school supplies, and household items. Both were owned and operated by the Norito Kawakami family and, along with other stores, presented a one-stop shopping experience for locals. Today, Eleele Shopping Center hosts community organization's fundraisers and remains a hub for local shopping and conveniences.
